Differences Between Destination Weddings And Elopements

By Joshua Lynn

In a nutshell, destination wedding is a type of wedding that is held somewhere out of town. Some bridal couples even opt for a secluded beach as the venue for their wedding, where only a few selected friends and relatives are in attendance. This is probably the reason why some people could easily dismiss this kind of wedding as a fancy elopement.

That kind of belief however is far from true. Destination weddings and elopements are two distinct types of wedding and their only similarity lie on the need to conduct the wedding out of town.

Wedding destinations require time for the preparation and planning of the wedding ceremony. This means bridal couples will have to exhaust their options by doing a lot of research, browsing several websites, making many phone calls and doing some comparisons to determine the right location for the wedding.

In contrast, elopements don't require couples to spend much time for the wedding preparation. This is because elopements are usually spur-of-the-moment, whirlwind affairs. Couples that have eloped are more focused on finding the place where the procedures for obtaining marriage-license requirements is easy.

Planning a destination wedding therefore requires more effort. There is an element of work attached to planning destination weddings since couples will need to talk to a lot of vendors. They'll also have to make a decision about these wedding elements: flowers, ceremony reading vows, reception food and drink, wedding cake, music for the ceremony and reception, wedding cake and pictures. In elopements these elements can be eliminated.

Elopements are somewhat secretive, too. Aside from the fact that partners that have eloped do not usually announce their intentions, the wedding wedding is also usually a small ceremony because it involves only the groom and the bride.

So if a bridal couple is holding a wedding out of town and don't intend to keep it a secret, then they are certainly having a destination wedding.

Of course, a destination wedding will not be complete without hiring a wedding photographer. A destination wedding photographer will help couples capture the significant moments of their wedding and the beauty of the location as well. Bridal couples can consider hiring a photojournalist that specializes in destination wedding photography especially if they want their wedding photos to be more of spontaneous, natural-looking and minute-moment shots.
