Basic Facts About Recording Studio Software

By Kari Ratliff

Recording studio software is a term typically used to describe the numerous tools that are used in the process of sound mixing and recording within a studio setting. Typically, the equipment used varies. That includes the computer programs implemented as well. It is usually relative to the musician that is being recorded and the techniques of the music engineer or producer.

Generally speaking, studios have more than one room. In each of these rooms there are different elements with their own purpose. Most of these facilities include, at the minimum, a machine room, studio and control room. The area in which the tracking is done is usually selected because of its acoustic properties. These places and the equipment they house may also be used for non-music purposes. In fact, many facilities of this kind are where soundtracks, advertisements and voice-overs that are used in film and television are tracked.

Studios are filled with many kinds of equipment. For instance: drum kits, mixing consoles, keyboards, multi-track recorders, reference monitors, microphones and more. There may also be outboard effects, on-air lights, music workstations and digital audio workstations. Computers are a common standard, most are loaded with music programs as well.

Music software involves internal programs that are used on computers that aid in music production. This type of technology has been around for many years. The program makes it easier for users to express themselves musically, even if they are unable to play the traditional instruments. Examples of popular audio-recording programs: Cubase, Nuendo, Apple Logic Pro, MOTU Digital Performer and Pro Tools.

DAWS, or digital audio workstations, have become more and more popular. Such stations take advantage of the many music programs available. Often they are simple to use and able to work with many kinds of audio files. A lot of work that is handled in professional studios can now be done from just one computer. DAWS can act as a replacement for samplers, sound-effect machines, recorders, synthesizers and mixing consoles.

Most use Apple Macintosh for this kind of work. There are many programs that are designed for these systems. Still, there are programs available that are compatible for other computers, such as Windows and Linux. Most home and commercial studios take multi-track audio software to their advantage because it is PC based.

These programs continue to improve. They play a big part in the production of music and other audio used in television and film. As the technology advances, so do these computer programs. The specific equipment and technological tools used in a studio will range, but these elements are important to the overall quality of the final product.

Over time, technology has made huge advances and most recording facilities have done the same, benefiting by this progression. Nowadays, musicians and other individuals who require high-quality audio files use studios. What is employed in these studios will depend on the material being recorded and the engineer working, but there are various forms of recording studio software available. Digital audio workstations, which utilize music software, are commonly used to record, edit and produce tracks in this type of setting.
