How Not To Appreciate Literary Entertainment

By Patty Goff

There are some people who will admit that reading is not something they like to do. They might think that it is too much work or that they might not like it. However, they might have read books they did not like in the past, or they probably never made an attempt. This article will focus on how a person should not appreciate literary entertainment, so that they can enjoy reading novels, poetry or even short stories.

Most readers are quite familiar with what they like and do not like in books. This is one of the most important things a person can know. When an individual knows what is interesting to them, they do not waste time with the unfamiliar unless they are trying something new. Those who decide to read, might start with movies they like before actually reading the book.

As an illustration, a person might be a fan of horror films. They might decide to start reading for a change so that they can broaden their horizons. Instead of deciding which horror book to read, they choose a romance novel only to find that they have no interest in it. This scenario can cause a person to stop reading altogether.

Learning literary terms can also help an individual understand what they are reading. One does not have to be an expert when it comes to the various terms used in the world of literature. However knowing a few things can help one understanding what the writer is trying to convey.

It also helps to know the writer's intentions. Sometimes a writer might use fiction as a way to inform others of a truth. This is similar to using a parable or a tale to illustrate a moral understanding of life. Many times interviews are held with writers where they are asked why they wrote a particular book on any given subject. This can help to expand one's understanding of the author and their work.

Besides understanding what one likes and the author's intention, it is also important to understand that there is no right or wrong way to interpret anything. Even though an author might be coming from a particular frame of reference, someone with a different background might decide that a piece of writing means something completely different. Several people might love a novel, while several others might not like it at all.

On the other hand, having a personal opinion is good too, if one does not try to make that opinion the standard. Everyone has a right to look at a piece of writing from their point of view. Doing this will cause a person to enjoy their reading and get the most out of it.

People who love to read, tend to be the ones who will always have a book with them. They do not do this because they have to, but due to how entertaining it is. A good reader will always find fiction a pleasure since it gives them a new way to see the world and also helps to develop their imagination.
