Artifical Grass And It's Use

By Antoinette Quinn

Artificial grass is also known as turf, and is used to replicate a natural lawn. It does not grow, therefore it does not need to be trimmed. However, some maintenance is required. Turf must be periodically groomed and washed, and occasionally replaced in areas that become worn. If it is to be exposed to animals and pets, it should be washed on a regular basis. Animal urine will not harm or discolor turf.

Cleaning this synthetic turf is generally done by spraying water on the product, and using a brush or cloth to scrub the area clean. Solid waste must be picked up, and the area under washed thoroughly. External elements will not be absorbed, and areas that will be walked upon on a regular basis should be protected with a stone path or walkway. The life of artificial turf can be prolonged by having it professionally maintained on a yearly basis.

Under direct sunlight, turf can become very hot, reaching temperatures over ninety degrees. Rubber beads can be spread throughout the lawn to reduce this temperature and protect the product. Wider blades of grass generally increase the level of heat turf gives off. The bottom layer of synthetic turf is perforated, allowing excess liquid to drain out the bottom, much like natural grass. Occasionally extra drainage pipes are required.

This product will redirect a fair amount of sunlight and can be very shiny for the first few years. With time, this sheen will fade and the turf will begin to resemble natural grass. Installation is simple, and requires a level surface area for laying the turf. After the ground is excavated, the water-permeable base is put down. The next step is to roll out the turf and infill with sand or rubber.

Throughout the world, synthetic turf is used in the construction of sports arenas, lawns, and gardens. A minimal level of maintenance is required, and this product will last many years. Artificial turf is resistant to the elements and will not become worn or damaged even after extended use.

Turf is a relatively safe product, but there are a few potential dangers that need to be pointed out. This product can leak harmful chemicals into the surrounding area and local environment. Injuries have also risen with the use of synthetic turf, such as rashes and skin burns. Fields constructed with this product also rise in temperature, creating very warm pockets of air.

In the year of 1966, "AstroTurf" was produced. This was the very first type of synthetic turf, and many baseball fields began to first utilize the product instead of natural grass. Turf was also used in many homes as welcome mats. This product quickly became popular due to the decreased cost and time of maintaining it. Indoor playing fields were suddenly much easier to build and maintain, and cost only a fraction of the amount natural grass required.

Artificial grass can be purchased all over the world, and provides a low cost, low maintenance lawn. If this product is washed on a regular basis and properly maintained, it will last for many years before needing to be replaced. Professionals can be hired to restore or maintain artificial turf.
