Understanding The Real Essence Of Christmas

By Alaric Sowerby

If you hear the term Christmas, what actually comes to your head? I suppose most people would wish to think about food, gifts, family and perhaps anything that causes us to feel happy. Basically, that is what Christmas is supposedly all about. It ought to remind us of all the wonderful stuff that life gives. Regardless of how big or small our savings or income might be, Christmas should be celebrated with happiness and joy. It doesn't truly matter how much or how little we're giving for as long as we are sharing it heartily. This is the true meaning of Christmas.

However, more than the expensive gifts, personalized Christmas cards, sumptuous dinner or the somewhat endless merrymaking, I believe that we must not forget about why we celebrate Christmas.

When I was much youthful, my mom and dad used to tell me stories about Jesus Christ. I remember that the plot of his birth or what most of us might know as the nativity was my favorite. I think that it was the most striking story about Jesus Christ before he was nailed in the cross. That's because it feels so humbling to know that somebody as great as him will be born with extreme simplicity. Perhaps, that time, it was still a really inexpensive way to be born.

Nowadays, pregnant women will meticulously choose the clinic they are planning to give birth and families would need to spare a lot of money for this particular occasion. Before the birth, expectant mothers would have to purchase plenty of items for the unborn baby and we now have the modern technology which allows us to take a glance of how our unborn children look like. I guess giving birth today has become far too extravagant.

During Jesus' period, he was delivered inside a manger. A manger is basically an animal shelter. Thus basically, when Mary had been experiencing labor pains, she was seeing farm animals. And if ever the newborn Jesus can see, he could have first seen farm animals apart from his mother and father. There were no nurses and no doctors to help them.

I really hope that whenever we have Christmas or intend to mail some business Christmas cards, we will always remember the humbleness that God has shown us. And as long as we are able to, we should always keep ourselves humble and grant this humility to others. I hope that it does not just take place on the twenty fifth of December but the entire year. In this way, we would have not been fortunate to help Jesus during the time of his delivery yet we will definitely have lived up to the ideals and lessons that He has taught us.
