Picking Out Silver Speaker Cable Pointers

By Rosalind Landry

Entertainment makes for passing time enjoyable. Whatever your taste you can expect that you will have some real good time. It makes for perfect activity when you have guests over, enjoying movies and music that you consider fun. Many people install entertainment systems in their homes to maximize their viewing experience. The images will be a lot sharper and sound a lot crisper because of the developments in technology. To get the most out of your appliances you are going to need the best components, when you are looking for your silver speaker cable, make sure you get one that is made of great quality.

Speaker wires or zip cords are used in making electrical connection between the loudspeaker and the audio amplifier. They consist of electrical conductors which are insulated individually by plastic like PE, PVC or Teflon. The wires are electrically identical however they are marked so that the correct polarity of audio signal can be identified.

Zip cords are components that are passive and described by the electrical impedance. This is opposition which a circuit presents to electric currents. Impedance carry three properties determining performance. They are inductance, capacitance and resistance. An ideal zip cord does not have inductance, capacitance or resistance.

Resistance makes for an important specification for zip cords. Shorter lengths approach the ideal as resistance is one function of length with conductors. Resistance carries the greatest effect with performance. Performance of the conductor will be optimized by limiting the length. The longer the distance an audio signal will have to travel, the more the resistance and the more power loss created.

Thicker and lower gauge cords offer least resistance so it has the best capacity to carry audio signals for great distances. This is why it is important that one determines the distance the cord runs. Longer distances will need for thicker gauge wires. This also lessens strain on the receiver. 12 gauge wires are used for those running about 30 feet, 14 for 18 feet and 16 for a ten foot run.

Neither type nor thickness of the insulator would have audible effect given they are made out of good quality material and it would not chemically react with its wire. Poor quality insulator would increase the resistance over time because it would accelerate the oxidation of the conductors. Ensure that the wire you get is well insulated to have it last longer.

Determine quality desired. If your components are of high quality then use wires that are high quality. They will be more expensive however they will last longer, offer more resistance to any interference and give you the best in sound quality.

The materials used in zip cords vary. Copper has low resistance, is widely used and is less expensive. Silver will have a lower resistivity thus you can have thinner wires for the same resistivity as copper. They would be more expensive however. Gold would have the highest resistivity. It is possible to use in plating the end terminators.

Choosing the right silver speaker cable will make for great sound quality. You get what you pay for when it comes to zip cords. Good quality is always good money.
