Painting a Story with Picture Photography

By Karl Berch

Candid and spontaneous photographs taken during a session are infrequently the ones our customers love the most. We always ask them to bring something personal that reflects who they are at this time in there lives. For seniors it is most often some sporting kit a musical instrument. They also love bringing their pets. We've had everything form dogs and cats to snakes and horses. For younger kids it's generally a favourite toy that is near and dear to them.

Having some personal items available in a photograph session makes getting those candid's a simple process.

The most effective way to tell a story about a senior that I've come up with is to get seniors actually concerned in the session. I'lI begin by having them show me what they brought and then have them let me know why it's important to them. It is fantastic how fast they open up when they are talking about something they love. When they are interacting with me this way, they're engaged and relaxed and some great candids and an engaging story can be caught.

With the younger kids I love to put them on the set with their favourite toys and just let them play and have some fun. I try to do very little directing and if their sufficiently old, I just talk with them about the toys and what their doing with them. After a few minutes they don't even know they're here to be photographed and a great story starts to emerge.

Pictures are thought to be worth 1000 words. The most valuable thing that we all share on this earth is time. It is the only thing that we are able to give away and never get back. While we may only be on this earth for a limited time, our portraits will live on for ever. Footage are freeze frames of moments of time you can only get back through an image. Simply by picking up an old image you can abruptly emerge yourself into a sea of emotion. Is capturing a second in your life truly worthwhile? I suspect the answer's quite plain.

Senior pictures are instant history lessons that offer you a window to the past. Ways of life can sometimes be explored in vivid detail with a picture and your imagination. We continually use photos that past cultures made to study what they were like. Have you got a documented history of your life for future generations?

Photos have a unique way of capturing minute details. Video is nice , but hails compared to the detail you get with an easy photograph. You can capture everything down to the feel of your skin in an image. These minor details all help capture the basis of the photograph and moment of time portrayed.
