By Margaret Nelson

When you are interested in a relaxing art, you should consider making baskets. This activity is not only fun but is also easy with very few materials needed. After you have mastered making a coiled basket, it will allow you to create any size and shape of the container. Make sure you read the guidelines below to make a good quality product.

Start by assembling all equipment and material you require for the task. First, you have to look for the materials to be utilized in crafting. Choose a color of your liking. Mostly, cotton and raffia are the materials used. A pair of scissors, universal needles, and sewing machine are the remaining equipment needed. If you do not have the mentioned tools, buy them at a store.

The materials must be cut to the required sizes. Cut them to about a centimeter in width and choose a length you like. A rotary cutter or ruler can assist you in measuring. You then need to craft the base. Before doing this, set up your machine for a zigzag stitch. You will require a three-millimeter length and a five and a half millimeter width for working. The stop down feature needs to be used as you will have to pivot while starting.

Use your hand in coiling the material until you get a flat circle measuring about a half to one inch in diameter. You should note that the code needs to come out from the circles left side. You then need to place the circle you have created under the presser foot. Once you have done this, continue with stitching starting from the middle. By continuing to stitch, you will be able to create the bottom part of the container.

You then need to craft the sides. When you are ready for this step, consider wedging your hand below the bases circle as you push it against the machines left side. Continue to stitch and press on the cord for the sides not to flare. When enough amount of pressure has been applied, the side of the containers will curve inwardly. Ensure you stitch vertically to complete the sides.

When you have achieved the most appropriate size of your bowl, you need to cut the rope and remember to leave a two-inch tail. Stitch the tail back and forth for around a half an inch followed by cutting the thread. You then should set up the machine for a close zigzag. After folding the tail over the edge, your bowl is now ready.

When you want to add a bit of color, die them in a tub by using dylon or rit dye. Prior to this process, ensure that you wet the baskets using water. You can then put it in the solution making sure that it is immersed in water completely for consistent coloring. When you want a light color, more water should be used for diluting the dye.

An important point to note is that the whole process must be done precisely and keenly. Doing this slowly ensures that no errors are realized and that work realized is of quality. By doing this over and over, you will become an expert at your work. You can make a good amount of money by practicing this craft.
