In 1769, a Spanish explorer by the name Gaspar de Portola discovered the city. The city was know as Santa Cruz. The name actually means holy cross as a way to show respect to the local missions in the area. Mexico gained control of the area by 1820s then Americans started flooding in to the area as well. After California became a state in 1850 the area was declared one of the 27 counties of the country.

The beach environment is among the main factors that the area can attribute to its fame worldwide. The beach environment allows people to take part in various types of water sports with surfing and swimming as the most common. The best worldwide surf waves also attribute to this. Other water sports done in the area include diving, sailing and padding.

The area is also takes measures to conserve its culture and historic value and to prove this, it has a museum dedicated to historic surfers. The frequent events held in the area in which surfers compete with each other has been key information to record in the museums. The events are often intentional and attract surfer experts worldwide. Some of the historic surfers even work at the museum.

Water sports may not be an interesting activity for you but this does not mean that you should stay bored during your stay in the area. The area also has forests that are suitable for various outdoor activities that enable one to relate with nature. These companies have been producing some of the common wine brands we know today for example Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignons and Pinot Noirs.

For those who are concerned about the foods they consume, then they need not be concerned when in the area. This is because the area takes high effort in ensuring that it produces organic foods. Most of the menus in the hotels will thus include of natural fruits and vegetables. If the organic diets are combined with the activities one can take part in the area, then they can end up using the visit as a weight loss program.
