The 3 Big Missteps Film Students Should Note

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

If you want to talk about film, there's no doubt that there will be much to cover. Different subjects fall under this type of media, genres like action, drama, and horror being some of the most popular. These films have to be made with care, which means that certain oversights unaccounted for by rookies or brand new art students have to be avoided. As far as the oversights in question are concerned, here is a list of 3 that shouldn't be overlooked.

As far as the film itself is concerned, casting may be overlooked. More specifically, the importance of choosing the right people for the job may be lost, which does nothing to improve the quality of any movie. As a matter of fact, it'll hurt the production process, since people in the wrong roles tend to struggle with the material they are given. For this reason, it's important to be vigilant when going about the casting process in film.

Empathy is one of the most important elements in a film, which makes matters all the more concerning when it's missing. "The Wizard of Oz" is an effective example, one of the reasons being Dorothy and her goal of returning home. The movie presents the character in such a way that makes her likable, which means that you want her to succeed that much more. This is empathy at work, which is absolutely necessary for the sake of film production.

Filmmaking also hinges on marketing, for those who may not have believed this. You have to take into account that those in film have to advertise their wares, meaning that different services will have to be brought into the fold. Many movie producers have taken to social media, in this day and age, which makes sense when considering the audiences these websites possess. Keep in mind, though, that this is just one of the many paths that can be taken in the advertising sense.

If there's one thing that can be said about film, it's that there are right and wrong ways to go about the creative process. With that said, if you're going to get involved in the filmmaking process, it's the latter that will be especially noteworthy. Make it a point to educate yourself, as you can attend an art school with a major in film production. Once you graduate, you can put that extensive degree of knowledge to the best of use, ensuring that only captivating films are made.
