By Lilia Moody

Not everyone can conduct a therapeutic sound project. Only professionals who are trained in the same can do so. Music therapy is the use of music to ensure the wellbeing of the clients who are suffering from different problems. Every case is unique and requires a different approach, while one genre might suit a person very well, it might not be the best choice for another. It all varies from person to person.

The different aspects of music like physical, emotional, spiritual etc. Are used in the course of music therapy to heal the client. There are different ways in which music can heal a person, he can either listen to it, play it, move to it, or even sing it. It is all subjective to the nature of the client and the approach that the therapist takes. All these factors are kept into consideration and then a treatment course is planned for the client.

It is proven that listening to lively and pleasant music can uplift the mood of a person. It is of great help in the improving the social life too. Music is said to be one of the most effective conversation starters and the base to great friendships.

One of the many uses of music therapy is its use in the treatment of mood disorders in teenagers. It is the most productive age of a human being. The identity formation occurs at this age, and it is important that the teenagers are kept calm and stable so that they turn out to become better products of the society. Music therapy helps in doing the same.

Music therapy can also be combined with the regular treatment for patients who have had a stroke. People who have had a stroke tend to be a lot more anxious, nervous, helpless and aimless. Music can enhance their condition by helping them maintain emotional and mental stability. It is statistically shown that people who use music therapy along with their regular treatment have been in better moods and in a better state of mind where they are ready to accept their condition and are willing to make adjustments for it.

As already proven time and again, music has many mood uplifting abilities. This makes it very effective in the treatment of depression. It hinders the production of the stress hormone- Cortisol. This leads to a happy and a pleasant state of mind. It also allows the person to be emotionally free, and makes him a lot more expressive.

While adults require music therapy for such major problems, children have their own needs too. Short attention span, problems with communication and behaviour and lack of social skill can be treated with the use of music therapy. Generally children are encouraged to learn to play an instrument, to make sure that the child is doing something productive in the session hours and also developing a skill.

The modern forms of a therapeutic sound project were used after the world wars. People took to song and dance to socialise and keep themselves distracted. It became their stress buster. But the Greek mythology says that Apollo is to be credited for the advent of music therapy because he was the first one to use it to treat mental disorders.
