Starting Out As A NJ Videographer

By Charles Wallace

For family events and parties, one member of the family is always walking around, filming what is going on. For other bigger events like weddings, however, people prefer when a professional NJ videographer handles the filming. This way, you are sure that the video will be of good quality with no loud background noises, or some missing scenes.

If you are interested in this line of work, there are a number of things you should know. You need to actually know the craft. This will mean knowing how the equipment works, what angles work best, and even how to edit and add some effects. You should take some classes at a registered institution, or start teaching yourself at home.

Once you have the knowledge, you need the equipment in order to start working. This will be the video cameras and computers for editing. At school, you should learn which cameras are best for which jobs, and also which applications you will require in order to work. Before you save enough money to get your own equipment, you can rent some in order to continue working.

After you get the training and the tools of the trade, you will need the clientele. If you plan to start as a freelancer you will have to aggressively market yourself, in order for you to be well known. It is easier to initially work with a well-known company, and then from here you can slowly build your name. Initially, when marketing yourself, you might need to use some incentives like discounts, in order to attract clients.

Even if you will be behind the camera for most of the event, you still need to have good communication skills. This is what will enable you to convince a customer that you are the best fit for them. You also need to respond to correspondence in good time. If you take too long to respond to an email or phone call, the client may get bored and look for someone else.

Although you might want to specialize in just one area, you should be flexible. When starting, you might need to take on jobs which you might find tiring, or may not even like. As annoying as they may be, they will help you build a client base, and will also show your clients that you put them first. Over time, you may opt to pick one area like weddings or interviews then stick with it.

In business, you need to make sure you do not stagnate because this will make you redundant and will cost you. You need to make sure that you are always bettering your skills, in order to remain relevant. Once you find out what works for you, you can go about setting your limits to ensure that you do not overwork, or damage your image because you were overconfident.

Initially, setting a price for your work might be difficult. If you set it too high you might not get any work, but if you put it too low you will not make any money. You can ask a professional to help you with the pricing. You can also look at the prices being charged by other professionals, and then use this to determine your charges.
